IAJ Director, Michael Schmidt's interview on policing and Marikana
IAJ's Director, Michael Schmidt was interviewed on the Voice of the Cape radio station on the state of the nature of reporting on changes in policing in South Africa one year after the Marikana Massacre - and what role the IAJ is playing in shaping this state.
The interview took place after the Institute hosted a seminar titled "Reporting South Africa's Policing Crisis: Marikana One Year Later". The seminar focused on the nature of reporting on changes in policing (from a civilianised force to a more militarised one), and on dramatic processes such as the rise of AMCU in the platinum sector. It interrogated whether journalists understand the forces in play, and how to report on complex socioeconomic issues.
