About the IAJ

IAJ - Quote By Nelson MandelaThe Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ) is an established media journalism and communications training institution based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The IAJ was set up by veteran South African editors and journalists to provide mid-career training to media professionals that is leading edge and relevant to the rapidly-changing media landscape. The IAJ is South Africa’s premier provider of journalism and communications short courses, longer-term mentorships, and residency programmes, with an African footprint and global reach through our international partners.

Since its inception, tens of thousands of people have passed through the IAJ's doors, and many of them now occupy key posts in the media. Today, the IAJ has an unmatched reach across the African continent, and is internationally respected. It is independent of government, industry and academia – yet works closely with all these sectors in advancing the quality of journalism and communications.

Its innovative approach to curriculum development makes it responsive to the rapidly-changing media landscape, while acting to promote plurality in the media, and to strengthen democracy. Over two decades, it has earned a high reputation for providing relevant, tailored training for media, NGO, corporate, and government clients. The IAJ’s presence is extended internationally through partnerships with other top training institutions in Germany, India, and the United States.
